Innovation is necessary for competition.
Spypoint cellular camera has created a 12MP – 4G LTE trail camera with unlimited power, called LINK-S which uses a built in solar panel that charges the internal rechargeable battery, and comes with a pre-activated SIM.
LINK-S alternative power options
Unlike other brands, AA alkaline or lithium batteries are optional power sources on this unit, in other words, this device can be powered with 8 AA alkaline or lithium batteries, but are not the main power option.
If planning to use them, they should be either all alkaline or all lithium, but rechargeable AA batteries are not recommended since the lower voltage can cause operational issues.
Additionally, a separate rechargeable lithium battery pack can be purchased can be used to power the camera. This alternative is better than using AA alkaline batteries because it is less affected by cold temperatures and lasts up to 2 times longer.
Last but not least, this cam has a built in 12V jack where a 12V external battery or 12V adapter can be connected to provide power.
An additional 12V solar panel cannot be plugged in directly to the 12V port since it will not recharge the internal battery, but you can use the external 12V battery and plug another solar panel if you desire.
A fast and easy setup process is advertised by the manufacturer, and the overall impression from users is the same.
SIM card has already been pre activated for users, and all they have to do is download the free SPYPOINT LINK app on a mobile device where they´ll be asked for a cell phone number and email. All the settings in the app are the same one as in the camera.
To start, data is received directly from Spypoint from major service providers and as an incentive, they offer free unlimited photos for the first 30 days.
Then, there are three data plans available: the Annual and Annual+ plans have a 12 month subscription and the Hunt plan has a 3 month subscription. These plans work in the USA, Canada, Europe and other regions of the world.
If you don’t want to select an available plan you can still transmit and receive 100 free monthly photos during the whole year with a photo history of 7 days.
These plans have 5 main features:
- Subscription: users may choose either 12 months or 3 months
- Free App access: it is included on all three plans
- Monthly photo transfer: it includes either 250 photos per month (Annual plan) or unlimited photos (Annual+ and Hunt plans)
- Photo history: 7 past days (Annual plan) or unlimited (Annual+ and Hunt plans)
- mySPYPOINT access: is either basic (Annual) or full (Annual+ and Hunt). mySpypoint is an online camera and photo management system.
Here are other important features for Link-s series
LEDs and Flash range: this device is equipped with 42 super low glow LEDs for sharp quality images at night.
Its IR flash can detect up to 100 Ft., which is the distance from the closest to the furthest point where the electronic flash can illuminate.
If the motion detector detects beyond the range of the IR illumination at night, users can reduce the sensibility settings within the mobile app.
Blur reduction technology: when setting up the camera, you´ll notice 3 night modes: Optimal Mode, IR Boost Mode, and Blur Reduction Mode. This last one is to avoid motion blur, which are stripes on the photo produced by low light conditions and fast moving animals. Setting the “Night Mode” to “Blur” should help getting less blurry images.
Multi-shot: when using “Photo Mode” it allows the unit to capture up to 3 consecutive shots every time a subject is detected with a delay of 5 seconds between each shot.
Trigger speed: 0.07 seconds
Link EVO, and Link EVO-V (Verizon)
Spypoint wireless camera has also created this line of products. The 12MP EVO series have some differences towards the Link-S.
Power: they don’t have the built in solar panel or internal rechargeable battery, but they can still use alternative power options such as the rechargeable lithium battery pack and have an external 12V jack where a 12V battery or 12V adapter can be hooked up.
Surprisingly EVO series are not compatible or ready to work with an external solar panel, in other words, they don’t have a built in solar panel jack that can be used to connect a panel that maintains the lithium battery pack charged.
Activation and data plans: it is as easy as the Link-S series. The EVO series also have the same plans and the same free data options. EVO-V runs on Verizon, but users should first verify that such coverage service is available in their area.
Other important features
EVO cameras are also equipped with 42 super low glow LEDs for sharp quality images at night, but their flash range is up to 90ft.
Blur detection: there is no blur detection technology on EVO series
Multi-shot: up to 2 consecutive pictures per detection with a 5-second delay between each photo
Trigger speed: 0.3 seconds.
Link-4G and 4GV (Verizon)
Another line of products is the Link 4G series, which are almost similar to Link-S series. They have same mega pixels, flash range and trigger speed. They are also equipped with blur detection technology.
Data plans and activation are the same as Link-S and EVO series.
Their Multi-shot ability goes from 3 to 6 consecutive pictures per detection.
In regards to power or alternative power, they use 6 AA lithium or alkaline batteries.
An option for lithium battery pack and external (12V jack) are also available such as on the EVO series. As opposed to that other line, Link-4G can use a solar panel which can be used to recharge the lithium battery pack.
